This visit to Nara was made possible as part of my Creative Wales Award to research traditional recipes and techniques of ink stick making.
From older methods of burning Pine and resin from the surrounding forest to the newer use of refined oils, Kobaien has been making Sumi since the 1740's.

Nantyffin Burning. Nantyffin Farm.
Wood Pile
Ash tree felled and cut on Nantyffin farm as fuel for the burning of Blackface fleece. The soot collected from the burning will be used as the main ingredient for Nantyffin pigment.
